The spectacular scenery of the American National Parks is a direct result of their underlying geology. This course takes a select group of national parks in the American West to illustrate a broad range of geological processes. These parks include Crater Lake, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Death Valley to cover topics such as volcanism, plate tectonics, geological time and history, mountain-building, and alpine glaciation.
Core components: Grading is based on a midterm, final exam, written assignments, and a required lab. Students may elect to take one or more optional field trips.
