Expanded course description

Culture of the Weimar Republic: The politically tumultuous Weimar Republic was the birthplace of avant-garde modernism on one hand and fascism on the other. We will discuss the revolutionary developments of film and modern mass media, the tragic turns from expressionist to fascist art, from revolutionary drama to literary critiques of fascism. Major topics include Society/Corruption, Masses/Technology/Power, Life as Montage, Male and Female Gaze, Fascism. Authors and filmmakers to be studied include Fritz Lang, Georg Wilhelm Pabst, Bertolt Brecht, Ernst Toller, Georg Kaiser, Alfred Döblin, Thomas Mann, Leni Riefenstahl. No knowledge of German required; readings and discussions in English.
