Cincinnati, Ohio skyline. A typical U.S. urban area [link]
This course examines the history, institutions, politics, and future of American cities.
After a brief overview of the formation of modern cities in the United States and an assessment of the different forms of city government, we will examine some of the numerous problems that have plagued urban areas including race and ethnic divides, finances, and federalism. Next, we will examine how cities have attempted to adapt to these problems, and how the federal government has helped and hindered in that process. Last, we will examine how some cities have overcome problems in unique ways, and how the culture wars, the exurbs, and terrorism have changed urban life and introduced new challenges for American cities.
